TED Summary: Jamila Lyiscott- Three ways to speak English


Ms Lyiscott is an articulate which means she doesn’t have to think of the right words to use in a sentence. She can speak in three language styles (one of those is broken English) and she can make them equal, because she is an articulate. Perhaps people would think that it is ignorant to speak broken English, but even an articulate American sounds foolish to British, tho. Although people might think that broken English is not cool, it also has the rule.

She also told the audience that she might not always come before them with the perfect English, because she speaks three tongues: when she is with her friends, when she is in school and when she’s in home. She is a trilingual orator, sometimes she consists with her language, sometimes she switch them when she feels bored about it and sometimes she even feels confused about it when she mixes them up.

She knows that she has to borrow English because her own language was stolen. She speaks broken English so that people can remember that their current state is not a mystery. People are being so judgemental somehow, she said. For example, the negative images that people address to people like her. She talks like that doesn’t mean she promotes the ignorance given to them, but it is about linguistic celebration, because she is an articulate
